Short version. You can use Steer with your own AI keys and no account, or sign in to get free questions that need no keys. Your API keys stay in your browser. Your rooms stay there too unless you sign in: if you sign in, new rooms are saved to your account by default so you can open them on any device, and you can turn that off or delete them any time. Your questions pass through our server for a moment so we can forward them to an AI provider, and we do not log them or keep them anywhere except inside a room saved to your account. If you sign in, we also keep your email address and a count of your free questions. We also keep anonymous usage numbers, and an email address for updates only if you give it to us on purpose.
Who we are
Steer is built and run by Toshe Trajanov in North Macedonia, through Steer Lab, Inc., a Delaware company that is being set up. Questions about this policy, or requests to delete data, go to hey@letsteer.ai.
What stays in your browser
Your API keys are saved only in your browser's local storage on your device, and are never synced to your account. If you use Steer without signing in, your rooms, your questions and every model's answers are saved there too, and we cannot see them. If you sign in, new rooms are also saved to your account (see "Accounts and free questions" below). If you clear your browser data, they are gone, and we cannot recover them. The "Export rooms" button saves your rooms (never your keys) as a file on your device, and "Import rooms" reads such a file back in your browser. We never receive the file.
What passes through our server
When you ask a question, your browser sends it, the room context, and the API key for the provider you chose to our server at app.letsteer.ai. Our server forwards the request to that provider (for example Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek, Mistral, xAI or Groq) and streams the answer back. With free questions, our server uses Steer's own key for OpenAI, Google or Together AI (which runs DeepSeek's open model) instead of yours. We do not log the question, the context, the answer or your key, and we do not store your key. A question and its answer are stored only inside a room saved to your account, if you are signed in. The provider receives your content under its own terms and privacy policy, so check theirs. Steer's own web search option uses the search tools of those providers.
What we collect without an account
Website traffic. A short script records the page path, the referring site name (or the utm_source label), a rough screen size group, and your country, which comes from a header our host adds. It does not set cookies, and it skips visitors who send Do Not Track. Visitors are counted with an anonymous identifier made by a one-way hash of the day, your IP address and your browser type. It changes every day, so it cannot follow you across days, and your IP address is not stored.
Usage events. We record that something happened, for example a room was created, a question was sent (with the number and names of providers used), a moderator review finished, or a verdict was copied. These records contain no question text, answers, keys or identity.
Model call records. For each call we store the provider, the model name, which stage of a question it was, token counts, number of searches, timing and whether it succeeded, with a random per-question label. These records contain no content.
Hosting analytics. Our host, Vercel, provides its own visitor counts and speed measurements for the site.
If you join the email list
If you tick the consent box and submit your email, we store the address, where you signed up on the site, the exact wording you agreed to and the time. We use it to tell you when Steer Pro and included credits launch and to send occasional product updates. We do not sell or share it. To unsubscribe or have it deleted, email hey@letsteer.ai. The list is stored separately from the usage records above and is never matched to them.
Accounts and free questions
You can sign in with Google, GitHub or an email address (we send a one-time link or code, no password). Signing in is how we give you free questions that run on Steer’s own AI keys, and how we stop one person using them all.
What we store when you sign in. Your email address, a user ID, and, for the free questions, a random label for each question you ask, how many free questions you have used, and for each model call the provider, model name, timing and an estimated cost. Apart from rooms saved to your account (below), we do not store the text of your question, the context or the answers.
Which providers see free questions. Free questions are answered by OpenAI, Google, and DeepSeek’s open model run by Together AI, a US company, using Steer’s own keys. We send the question to Together AI’s servers, not to DeepSeek’s own service. Each of them receives the question and the room context under its own terms and privacy policy, like any provider you would use with your own key.
Signing in with Google. Google tells us your email address and name. We only use the email address to sign you in.
Signing in with GitHub. GitHub tells us your email address and username. We only use the email address to sign you in.
Room sync (on by default when you sign in). While you are signed in, new rooms are saved to your account by default: the room’s context, questions and answers are stored so you can open it on another device. Rooms that were already on your device stay there until you sync them. You can switch off “Save new rooms to my account” in the account menu, or switch sync off for one room, which deletes the stored copy. Deleting a room, or choosing “Delete synced data”, deletes the stored copies. API keys are never synced.
Decisions and check-ins. The decision card under a verdict (a checklist, what you decided, how it turned out and which answer was closest) is saved with the room: in your browser, or in your account if that room is synced. If you choose an email check-in while signed in, we also store a short note of what you decided (up to 120 characters), the room and question IDs and the check-in date, send you one email that day, and keep the record only until you log the outcome, remove the decision or ask us to delete it. We do not use it for marketing.
Deleting your account data. Write to hey@letsteer.ai from the email you signed in with, and we will delete your account, free-question records and any synced rooms.
Who else handles data
Vercel hosts the website and the app.
Supabase stores accounts, free-question counts, rooms saved to your account and check-in reminders.
Resend delivers the sign-in and check-in emails.
Google handles “Continue with Google” sign-in.
GitHub handles “Continue with GitHub” sign-in.
Together AI runs DeepSeek’s open model for the free questions.
Cloudflare stores our usage records and the email list (Cloudflare D1).
The AI providers you choose receive your questions, as described above.
We do not sell personal data and we do not show ads.
How long we keep things
Usage records and the email list are kept until we delete them or you ask us to. We may add automatic deletion of old usage records later and will update this page if we do.
Your choices
You can ask us to show you, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to stop sending you email, by writing to hey@letsteer.ai. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights under local data protection law, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Steer is not meant for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Not advice
Steer helps you check answers from AI models. It does not give financial, legal or medical advice.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
